We have obviously been remiss in bringing up Esther and have inadvertantly taught Esther that “Do as I say, not as I do” is perfectly acceptable.
At home, we have a policy that we only speak English, so that the children will have a good foundation of English and hopefully so that they will become fluent when they are older. As part of this policy, we have to remind Esther that she should speak only in English when at home. Obviously this doesn’t work, but we can at least try to limit the amount of Hebrew she speaks at home. However, she has managed to teach Shira (who’s only just 2 and doesn’t have a huge vocabulary to start with) to say “Well done Shira” in Hebrew (and to sing Happy Birthday in Hebrew as well).
This evening, as she and Shira are laying in bed (meant to be going to sleep), I overheard Shira saying “Well done Shira” in Hebrew. Esther shouted over at her, “Don’t say that, we only speak English at home!”
